Imran Khan Receives Follow-Up Eye Treatment at Pims, Returns to Adiala Jail

Imran Khan claims only 15% vision remains in his right eye
RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan was transferred to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) in Islamabad on Tuesday for a follow-up treatment for his right eye.
Khan was brought from Adiala Jail under tight security for the second time since late January for ongoing care of his eye condition. Doctors had prescribed a series of three injections, with the next dose scheduled for March 23.
During his visit, a team of specialists conducted a thorough examination of Khan’s eye. A consultant cardiologist also performed echocardiography and an electrocardiogram, both of which showed normal heart function.
Informed consent was obtained from Khan before the procedure. The treatment was carried out under supervision of consultant ophthalmologists and a vitreoretinal surgeon from both Pims and Shifa International Eye Hospital.
Khan received the second dose of an anti-VEGF intravitreal injection as part of his ongoing care. The procedure was conducted in an operation theatre following standard medical protocols and precautionary measures.
The intervention was performed as day-care surgery, allowing Khan to be discharged later the same day. Hospital authorities confirmed that his vitals remained stable throughout the procedure and recovery period. He was provided with follow-up instructions and relevant medical documentation.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan confirmed the procedure, stating that the party was informed after the medical examination was completed. He added that Khan was safely moved from Adiala Jail to Pims and returned following the treatment.
Barrister Gohar also emphasized that PTI wants the former prime minister to be transferred to Shifa International Hospital for further medical care. He stressed that any future medical procedures should include Khan’s personal physicians to ensure transparency and trust.
The matter has drawn national attention following a report submitted to the Supreme Court, which stated that Khan suffers from central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). This serious eye condition has caused him to lose nearly 85% of vision in his right eye and is often linked to cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.
Khan, 73, has been in jail since August 2023 after multiple convictions, which he and PTI have described as politically motivated. He continues to appeal several cases while maintaining his innocence.
