Sonia Gandhi Blasts Modi Govt’s Subservience: India Surrenders to Israel, Betrays Tehran

03 March, 2026 14:40

Indian National Congress president Sonia Gandhi has strongly criticized the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in her article published in The Indian Express.

In her article, she accused the Modi government of giving up India’s diplomatic independence by openly favoring Israel while stepping away from its long-time ally, Iran. She wrote that the government’s “muted responses” and “ambiguous stance” are nothing more than a cowardly betrayal of India’s traditional foreign policy.

Sonia Gandhi said that India had always maintained a careful balance between Israel and Iran. According to her, this balanced approach has now been replaced by political showmanship. She criticized Modi’s high-profile engagements with Israel, saying they reflect a politically tilted and opportunistic approach instead of true diplomacy.

She pointed out that Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Israel without making a corresponding visit to Iran. In her view, this decision ended decades of careful and equal engagement with both countries. She said India has now chosen one ally over another, ignoring its historic policy of balance.

Gandhi also said that India’s muted response to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader shows that New Delhi has surrendered its independent foreign policy. She argued that this has created serious doubts about India’s credibility around the world.

According to her, what the government calls diplomacy is actually a failure to act firmly during times of crisis. She believes that ambiguity in foreign policy under Modi has made India’s position in global forums weak.

Sonia Gandhi added that while many countries are acting carefully, India’s clear alignment with Israel is being criticized. She described this posture as a tacit endorsement of geopolitical tragedies rather than a balanced foreign policy.

She also reminded readers that Iran had supported India in the past. She mentioned how Iran blocked pressure from the OIC on Kashmir in 1994 and helped India secure strategic projects such as Zahedan and Chabahar.
