US Approval for Russian Oil Purchase Raises Questions Over India’s Economic Independence

07 March, 2026 10:26

NEW DELHI, March 7, 2026: A recent decision by the United States Department of the Treasury to temporarily allow India to buy oil from Russia has sparked political debate in the country. Critics say the move raises serious questions about India’s economic and foreign policy independence.

The temporary permission was reportedly granted for 30 days due to rising global tensions and concerns about energy supply during the ongoing regional crisis.

Political Criticism Grows in India

Opposition leaders have strongly criticized the situation and questioned why India needs approval from United States to make decisions about its energy imports.

Senior opposition leader Rahul Gandhi publicly asked whether Washington will now decide from which countries India should purchase oil.

His comments quickly gained attention on social media and intensified the political debate inside India.

Congress Leaders Target Modi Government

Another criticism came from Priyank Kharge, a Congress MLA from Chittapur. In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), he questioned the authority of US officials to allow or restrict India’s purchase of Russian oil.

Kharge asked why the Indian government appears to follow American instructions in key economic decisions.

He also accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of turning India’s foreign policy into a political embarrassment.

According to him, the government of Narendra Modi should show more confidence and protect the country’s strategic independence.

Experts Raise Concerns Over Energy Policy

Energy analysts and political observers say the issue highlights the challenges India faces in balancing global relations while protecting its economic interests.

Some experts believe that pressure from Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has forced India to make compromises in its energy strategy.

They argue that if major economic decisions depend on approval from foreign governments, it could weaken India’s claims of independent foreign policy.

Analysts say the situation may also affect how ordinary Indian citizens view their country’s economic sovereignty.

While India has tried to maintain strong trade relations with multiple global partners, the recent decision has triggered a wider debate about how much influence foreign powers have over India’s strategic policies.

Observers believe the discussion about energy independence and foreign policy autonomy will continue in the coming weeks.
