Finance Ministry Denies Petrol Price Hike Statement Amid Speculation
Islamabad, March 2026: The government of Pakistan is preparing a petrol subsidy plan aimed at providing relief to low-income citizens, especially motorcycle and rickshaw owners, after a sharp rise in fuel prices.
The announcement follows directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who said that money saved through government austerity measures will be used to support the public.
Officials told the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum that work on the subsidy programme has already started with input from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and the Petroleum Division of Pakistan.
Who Will Be Eligible for the Petrol Subsidy?
According to the Petroleum Secretary, the subsidy will be provided mainly to motorcycle and rickshaw owners belonging to low-income groups. Eligibility will be determined using data from the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).
The government plans to ensure that the financial benefit reaches deserving citizens rather than businesses or companies.
Officials said the subsidy system will work similarly to the relief programme introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, when financial support was distributed using government databases.
Funding of the Subsidy Programme
Members of the Senate committee questioned officials about the source of the Rs23 billion allocated for the subsidy plan. Authorities responded that the funds were generated through government cost-cutting and austerity measures.
The Prime Minister has directed relevant departments to ensure the money directly benefits ordinary citizens affected by high fuel prices.
Pakistan’s Current Fuel Stock Situation
During the same meeting, the Petroleum Secretary also shared updated data on petroleum product reserves in Pakistan.
| Fuel Type | Available Supply |
|---|---|
| Petrol | 27 days |
| Diesel | 21 days |
| LPG | 9 days |
| JP-1 (Jet Fuel) | 14 days |
Officials said the country is closely monitoring fuel stocks due to global market disruptions caused by regional tensions.
Petrol and Diesel Prices in Pakistan
Despite rising global oil prices, the government recently decided not to increase fuel prices.
Current fuel prices remain:
Petrol: Rs321.17 per litre
Diesel: Rs335.86 per litre
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the decision aims to reduce financial pressure on citizens during challenging economic conditions.
Authorities said further details about the petrol subsidy programme, including the application process and eligibility verification, will be announced soon
