Government Urges Fuel Conservation Amid Rising Middle East Tensions

19 March, 2026 21:56

The federal government on Thursday called on citizens to adopt measures to conserve petrol and diesel, warning of potential disruptions in the availability of petroleum products in the coming days.

The appeal came during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad, which focused on implementing fuel-saving and austerity measures in light of the “rapidly deteriorating regional situation.”

Officials emphasized the importance of preparedness to handle any scenario, adapting policies and actions according to evolving circumstances. The meeting highlighted that carpooling should be encouraged, unnecessary travel avoided, and commuting minimized to save fuel.

In his remarks, the premier stated, “all relevant departments should remain prepared for emergency measures until the situation improves,” noting that the government’s ongoing austerity and savings policies have helped provide relief to the public.

The meeting also confirmed that sufficient petroleum product reserves are available to meet national requirements, with additional arrangements underway. Given the “unstable situation in the Middle East and the region, which could severely affect fuel supply,” further conservation measures are expected in the coming days.

Prime Minister Shehbaz directed that, in coordination with the provinces, a comprehensive plan be developed to address any potential emergency situation related to fuel supply.
