US lawmakers slam Trump’s speech as false claims push oil prices higher

02 April, 2026 14:54

American lawmakers have strongly criticized Donald Trump after his recent address to the nation about the ongoing conflict with Iran. They described his speech as confusing and full of false claims.

Trump delivered a 20-minute speech from the White House, where he said the war’s “core strategic objectives” were close to being achieved and could end in two to three weeks. However, many politicians said his speech repeated old statements and did not provide clear answers.

The speech also affected global markets. Oil prices quickly increased, and stock markets in Asia started to fall soon after his address.

During the speech, Trump again warned that the US could bomb Iran “back to the stone age” and mentioned possible attacks on important infrastructure like power plants and oil facilities. These comments drew strong reactions from lawmakers.

Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari called his remarks “vile, horrifying, evil” when referring to a country with millions of people. Congressman Jim Himes said oil prices rose quickly after the speech and added that he was still unsure what Trump actually said.

Senator Chris Van Hollen accused Trump of lying earlier when he claimed victory in the conflict. He warned that “This delusional man is a danger to our country and the world.”

Congressman Lloyd Doggett also criticized the speech, saying it was hard to pick the biggest false claim. He pointed out Trump’s statement that there was “no inflation” as especially questionable.

Meanwhile, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said the speech was poorly delivered and unclear. He warned that Trump’s actions in Iran could become one of the biggest policy mistakes in US history. He also said Trump is not fit to lead the country.

Senator Ed Markey strongly criticized the president, saying he spent the entire speech lying and making dangerous threats. He said Trump was asking people to accept a war that has already cost lives and money.

The conflict began on February 28, when the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran. Since then, Iran says it has carried out many retaliatory strikes under Operation True Promise 4, using missiles and drones to target US and Israeli positions in the region.
