US Threatens Iran With Unprecedented Economic Isolation

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned Iran that it could face severe economic pressure and unprecedented isolation from the global economy.

Bessent said the United States is expected to announce new sanctions and other economic measures against Iran next week.

Speaking to conservative television network Newsmax, Bessent said Iran would face a level of economic isolation that the world has never seen before.

He said the new US strategy would include several economic measures aimed at further separating Iran from the global economy. Washington is expected to announce additional steps next week as it seeks to increase pressure on Tehran.

Bessent also referred to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. He said continued restrictions on the waterway would affect the movement of goods from Iranian ports and could prevent cargo from moving in and out.

His comments suggest that the United States plans to increase economic pressure on Iran alongside its military pressure. The new measures could target Iran’s trade, revenues and access to the international financial system.
