Trump Suspends Russia Sanctions, Deepening Rift with Zelensky

17 October, 2026 17:15

US President Donald Trump has suspended several sanctions targeting Russia just two days before they were due to take effect, triggering criticism from lawmakers and further straining relations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The sanctions, passed by the US Congress and signed into law by Trump in September, were intended to increase economic pressure on Moscow. In an executive order issued Friday night, Trump argued that suspending certain measures was in the national interest.

Zelensky criticized Washington’s decision, saying it was unfortunate that the United States had chosen to “completely disregard” the sanctions. Relations between the two countries have deteriorated following a controversial US deal involving Russian diesel imports and Ukrainian allegations that the Trump administration withdrew crucial military support. Tensions have also escalated publicly, with Trump describing Zelensky as more difficult to deal with than Russian President Vladimir Putin, while the Ukrainian leader made pointed remarks about the importance of engaging with “real leaders” during an EU summit.

The sanctions legislation granted Trump broad authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on imports from the five largest purchasers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India. It also provided for measures targeting senior Russian officials, including Putin, financial institutions and vessels associated with Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, which is used to circumvent existing restrictions. The suspension has raised questions about Washington’s approach to economic pressure on Moscow and the future direction of US support for Ukraine.
