The 52nd session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) opened in Baghdad on Saturday, bringing together representatives of 57 Islamic nations to discuss pressing regional and international issues. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in the Iraqi capital to participate in the two-day meeting, held under the theme “Dialogue and Solidarity: Two Essential Pillars for Promoting Peace and Sustainable Development.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi inaugurated the session, with Iraq assuming the chairmanship of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers from Turkiye. The Palestinian question, the ongoing Israeli military offensive and humanitarian crisis in Gaza are expected to feature prominently in discussions, alongside regional political developments and efforts to strengthen cooperation among member states.

Ahead of the meeting, OIC Secretary-General Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed called on member states to strengthen solidarity and promote stability amid rising regional and international tensions. He emphasized the need for decisions addressing contemporary challenges and improvements to the organization’s working mechanisms. The agenda also includes economic cooperation, food security, humanitarian concerns and coordinated action to address shared challenges across the Muslim world.
