Major Blow to Taliban Regime as China Refuses to Open Wakhan Corridor

17 October, 2026 16:32

China has refused to open its border with Afghanistan through the Wakhan Corridor until its security concerns are addressed, according to the Afghan publication Atlas Press News Agency.

The report said security threats from Afghan territory have raised concerns among neighbouring countries. China is particularly concerned about border security and considers the East Turkestan Islamic Movement a threat to its Xinjiang region.

According to the publication, China did not attend the opening ceremony of the Wakhan road and has not formally recognised the project at the diplomatic level.

Chinese international affairs expert Zhu Yongbiao said the chances of opening the Wakhan border crossing were very low. He explained that the economic benefits of trade with Afghanistan were limited, while the security risks and costs remained high.

China’s decision reflects its concerns over border security and the potential threats linked to opening the route.
