Oman and Iran Hold Talks to Ensure Smooth Passage Through Strait of Hormuz
Oman and Iran conducted talks on Sunday aimed at easing passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the Omani state news agency reported. The meeting, held at the deputy ministers’ level in the foreign ministries of both countries, included participation from experts who discussed possible measures to ensure safe and uninterrupted maritime traffic.
The agency noted, “The experts from both sides put forward a number of visions and proposals regarding it.”
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway separating Iran and Oman, has been effectively closed since late February following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. The strait normally handles around 20 percent of the world’s oil and natural gas supply. Its closure has triggered global energy concerns and disrupted shipments of essential commodities, including fertilizers, raising the risk of humanitarian crises in parts of Asia and Africa.
The strait is 21 miles (33 km) wide at its narrowest point, with only 2 miles (3 km) of navigable lanes in both directions, making it a highly sensitive corridor for commercial and military vessels. The Oman-Iran discussions aim to prevent further disruption to global shipping and energy flows amid escalating regional tensions.
