WhatsApp Hacking in Pakistan Surges: Security Tips and How to Protect Your Account
Pakistan is experiencing a significant rise in WhatsApp hacking incidents, with many users falling victim to fraud and blackmail.
According to a report, cases of hacked WhatsApp accounts have increased sharply in recent months. Cybersecurity experts have emphasized caution, particularly regarding sharing verification codes and one-time passwords (OTPs).
Fraudsters often make calls from unknown numbers, impersonating courier company representatives. They inform victims of a package delivery and request the OTP sent to their phones. Once shared, hackers immediately take control of the account.
Compromised accounts are frequently used to contact friends and family, posing urgent emergencies to solicit financial help. These scams have caused significant financial losses, with elderly individuals and homemakers being especially vulnerable.
One victim reported that messages sent from his hacked account led to thousands of contacts being targeted, resulting in multiple people transferring money in his name.
Experts advise never sharing OTPs or personal details with unknown callers. Authorities stress that public awareness and digital safety practices are critical to preventing such cybercrimes.
