Iranian Delegation Led by Ghalibaf Arrives in Islamabad Ahead of US Peace Talks

11 April, 2026 09:28

Islamabad: A high-level Iranian delegation led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf arrived in Islamabad on Saturday ahead of key negotiations with the United States aimed at advancing a fragile ceasefire and exploring a broader peace framework in the Middle East.

The visit comes as diplomatic efforts intensify following a two-week truce brokered after weeks of conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

Top Iranian Officials Included in Delegation

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the delegation also includes Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who is expected to participate in high-level discussions in Islamabad.

Pakistani officials confirmed that the delegation was received by senior leadership, including the Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and top civil and military officials.

Pakistan’s Role as Host and Mediator

Welcoming the delegation, Pakistan reiterated its support for dialogue and diplomatic solutions. Officials said Islamabad is committed to facilitating talks that could help stabilize the region.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif earlier described the negotiations as a “make-or-break” opportunity to secure a durable ceasefire and prevent further escalation.

US and Iran Expected to Hold High-Level Talks

The talks are expected to include the American delegation led by US Vice President JD Vance, alongside Iranian representatives.

Both sides are entering the discussions with cautious optimism but remain deeply divided over key issues.

Key Issues on the Negotiating Table

Major sticking points include:

  • Iran’s nuclear programme and enriched uranium limits
  • Sanctions relief and access to frozen overseas assets
  • Security in the Strait of Hormuz
  • Regional military activity and ceasefire enforcement

Iran has also demanded the unfreezing of assets and guarantees on regional ceasefire commitments, while the US has pushed for restrictions on Iran’s missile programme.

Background of the Conflict

The conflict escalated after months of rising tensions and military exchanges involving Iran, Israel, and US forces in the region. A ceasefire was later announced after heavy losses and regional disruption.

Since then, both sides have accused each other of violations, though diplomatic efforts have continued through intermediaries.
