Iran Slams US Naval Blockade as ‘Gross Violation’ of Sovereignty, Urges UN to Act
Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, has strongly criticized the United States over its reported naval blockade targeting Iranian ports, describing the move as a serious breach of international law and a direct violation of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a formal letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the Security Council, Iravani condemned the action announced by US Central Command (CENTCOM) on April 12, warning that it represents a dangerous escalation in an already tense region.
“The imposition of a naval blockade is a gross violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Iravani stated.
He emphasized that the US decision violates Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use or threat of force, and described the blockade as a clear act of aggression under international law. According to Iravani, the move also breaches fundamental principles governing maritime law by interfering with Iran’s legitimate trade and restricting access to its ports.
The Iranian envoy further noted that the blockade disrupts international shipping and infringes on the rights of other nations engaged in lawful maritime commerce. He stressed that Tehran “firmly and in the strongest possible terms rejects and condemns the illegal action of the United States.”
Reaffirming Iran’s position, Iravani stated that the country reserves its right to respond within the framework of international law to safeguard its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests. He held Washington fully accountable for the consequences of its actions, particularly regarding regional and global security.
Calling for immediate intervention, Iran urged the United Nations and the Security Council to condemn the US action and take concrete steps to prevent further escalation. The envoy warned that continued tensions could destabilize an already fragile region and pose a broader threat to international peace.
“Given that the said illegal action constitutes a serious threat to international peace and security… the Islamic Republic of Iran calls on the Secretary-General and the Security Council… to oblige the United States to immediately cease its internationally wrongful acts against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he wrote.
The development comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, with analysts viewing the blockade as an attempt to pressure Iran economically by targeting its maritime trade and oil exports. Tehran has repeatedly cautioned that such actions risk further instability while reiterating its commitment to defending its national interests through lawful means.
