Trump Hints at Possible US-Iran Negotiations as Early as Friday
US President Donald Trump has indicated that a second round of US-Iran talks could take place as early as Friday, according to a report by the New York Post.
Trump reportedly responded, “It’s possible!” when asked via text message about claims that discussions mediated by Pakistan could resume in Islamabad within the next 36 to 72 hours.
The potential talks come as uncertainty continues around the ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran. While a temporary truce was extended, conflicting reports remain about the exact timeline for further negotiations.
A source briefed on the matter told Reuters that no fixed timeline has been set for extending the ceasefire with Iran.
Tensions remain high between the two sides, particularly over control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. The strait was previously closed by Tehran during earlier hostilities involving the US and Israel, which escalated tensions across the Middle East.
Fighting had ended after a ceasefire announcement, followed by diplomatic efforts led in part by Pakistan to bring both sides to the negotiating table. However, no permanent peace agreement has yet been reached.
Trump later stated that the ceasefire extension was made at Pakistan’s request while Iran prepares a unified proposal. However, he also confirmed that US naval operations and a maritime blockade against Iran would continue, a move Tehran has strongly opposed.
Iran has maintained that it will only return to negotiations if the US lifts the naval blockade. Iranian Ambassador to the UN Amir-Saeid Iravani stated that talks could resume in Islamabad once restrictions on Iranian ports are removed.
Meanwhile, Pakistani officials have confirmed that diplomatic engagement is ongoing with both Iran and the US. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar noted that formal confirmation from Iran regarding participation in talks is still pending.
Iran has also acknowledged Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei expressing appreciation for Islamabad’s role in attempting to de-escalate tensions and support peace efforts in the region.
