23 April, 2026 13:07

The Punjab Assembly has approved a new law to lower traffic fines and provide relief to the public. The law will come into effect after it is signed by the Governor of Punjab.

This amendment was passed with a majority vote. The purpose is to make fines more reasonable so that people are not under too much financial pressure, while still keeping traffic rules in place.

Fines Reduced for Motorcycles and Rickshaws

Under the new law, some motorcycle fines have been reduced from Rs 2,000 to Rs 1,000. The maximum fine for motorcycles is now Rs 2,000.

Rickshaw drivers have also been given relief. Some fines have been cut from Rs 3,000 to Rs 1,000, while serious violations will now have a fine of Rs 2,000.

Relief for Car Owners

Car and jeep owners will also benefit. Some fines have been reduced from Rs 5,000 to Rs 2,000. However, fines for major violations will remain at Rs 5,000.

No Change in Overspeeding

Fines for overspeeding have not been changed and will stay the same as before.

Changes for Larger Vehicles

For 2000cc and luxury vehicles, the maximum fine has been reduced from Rs 20,000 to Rs 10,000, while the minimum fine will be Rs 2,000.

Fines for Mazda, Coaster, and other small passenger vehicles have also been lowered and will now go up to Rs 7,000 instead of Rs 20,000.

Heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses will also get relief, with the maximum fine reduced from Rs 20,000 to Rs 10,000.

This step is aimed at making fines easier to manage for the public while still encouraging people to follow traffic rules.
