Magnitude 6.2 Earthquake Strikes Hokkaido as Japan Faces Rising Seismic Activity Concerns
A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 magnitude struck Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido early Monday morning, according to US and Japanese meteorological agencies, marking the latest in a series of significant seismic events affecting the region.
The earthquake hit at 5:23 am local time in southern Hokkaido at a depth of 83 kilometres, with the Japan Meteorological Agency later revising the initial magnitude from 6.1 to 6.2. Authorities confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued following the tremor.
Officials from the US Geological Survey assessed that the risk of major damage or casualties remained low due to the area’s relatively sparse population. However, Japanese authorities cautioned that regions experiencing strong shaking could face secondary hazards such as landslides and falling debris.
“In areas that experienced strong shaking, the danger of falling rocks and landslides has increased,” a Japan Meteorological Agency official stated, while also warning that aftershocks of similar strength could occur over the coming week.
The quake followed another seismic event earlier in the day, when a magnitude 5.0 earthquake was recorded offshore south of Hokkaido. These tremors come shortly after Japan was struck by a stronger 7.7 magnitude earthquake off Iwate prefecture, which injured several people and triggered small tsunami waves along northern coastal areas.
Following that major quake, “the likelihood of a new, huge earthquake occurring is relatively higher than during normal times,” the Japan Meteorological Agency had warned, raising concerns about ongoing seismic instability.
Japan lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most active earthquake zones, and experiences frequent seismic activity. The country records around 1,500 earthquakes annually and remains highly vulnerable to large-scale tremors.
The memory of the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which caused massive destruction and nuclear disaster at Fukushima, continues to shape Japan’s disaster preparedness policies as officials closely monitor ongoing seismic risks.
