Karachi faces water shortage risk after another Dhabeji power breakdown

27 April, 2026 17:31

Karachi may face a water shortage after a major power breakdown at the K-Electric Dhabeji Pumping Station on Monday.

According to officials, the outage was caused by K-Electric, which disrupted operations at the pumping station. The Water Corporation said the issue occurred in the second phase of the Dhabeji facility.

A Water Corporation spokesperson confirmed the issue struck the facility’s second phase, affecting two key supply lines due to back pressure. Repair teams are gearing up for immediate fixes, but frequent K-Electric blackouts keep hammering the network. The corporation has alerted K-Electric’s management.

This comes amid ongoing upgrades: Work started Saturday to link a new pipeline to the existing system at Dhabeji, slashing supply by up to 250 million gallons per day (MGD) for 48 hours. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) says the Transmission Line No. 5 interconnection, from noon April 25 to April 27, is part of a vital improvement program to modernize the city’s outdated infrastructure.

Residents in affected areas should store water and brace for low pressure. KWSC urges patience as these upgrades promise better long-term supply.
