Iran Welcomes Iraq’s PM-Designate Ali Faleh al-Zaidi, Reaffirms Support for Stability and Sovereignty

Iran has officially welcomed the nomination of Ali Faleh al-Zaidi as Iraq’s new prime minister-designate, marking a significant development in Iraq’s prolonged political deadlock.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed support for the decision announced by Iraq’s Coordination Framework, the country’s largest parliamentary bloc, which brought an end to months of political uncertainty. The coalition’s agreement to nominate al-Zaidi followed internal consensus after key political figures stepped aside from the race.

In a post shared on X on Friday, Araghchi said the Islamic Republic welcomed the selection of Iraq’s new leadership and extended his congratulations. He stated, “I congratulate my brother Ali Faleh al-Zaidi on his appointment,”

The Coordination Framework’s announcement came after prominent political leaders, including Nouri al-Maliki and outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, withdrew from consideration. Their decision was described by the coalition as “historic and responsible” decisions that helped resolve the political impasse and restore momentum to the government formation process.

Araghchi further wished the newly appointed prime minister-designate success in forming a government that would serve the Iraqi people effectively. He also emphasized regional cooperation and respect for sovereignty, stating, “Iran reaffirms its respect for the sovereignty of Iraq and its support for political stability, development, and the strengthening of [bilateral] cooperation in a way that serves the interests of both nations.”

The nomination of Ali Faleh al-Zaidi is widely seen as a breakthrough that could stabilize Iraq’s political landscape after months of uncertainty and stalled negotiations.
