Trump Says He Is “Not Satisfied” With Iran’s New Peace Proposal

02 May, 2026 10:15

US President Donald Trump has stated that he is “not satisfied” with a newly submitted Iranian negotiating proposal, as diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran remain stalled despite a fragile ceasefire.

Iran reportedly delivered the draft proposal to mediator Pakistan on Thursday evening, according to IRNA news agency, though the details of the document were not disclosed.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “At this moment I’m not satisfied with what they’re offering,” attributing the lack of progress to what he described as “tremendous discord” within Iran’s leadership.

He further commented on possible US responses, stating, “Do we want to go and just blast the hell out of them and finish them forever — or do we want to try and make a deal?” adding that he would “prefer not” to pursue military escalation “on a human basis.”

The ongoing conflict began after joint US and Israeli strikes on February 28, and although a ceasefire has been in place since April 8, peace negotiations have largely remained frozen, with only limited and unsuccessful rounds of dialogue.

In a separate development, Trump informed lawmakers that hostilities had “terminated,” even as questions remain over the legal status of continued military engagement and whether congressional approval is required.

Meanwhile, US defense planning continues to shift, including a reported withdrawal of troops from Germany and renewed arms sales to Middle Eastern allies, including missile systems and precision weapons.

Iran has maintained strategic pressure by keeping control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route, while the United States has implemented countermeasures targeting Iranian maritime access.

Despite ongoing tensions, the ceasefire has largely held, although sporadic violence continues in other parts of the region, including Israeli strikes in Lebanon against Hezbollah-linked areas.

Iran’s judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei reiterated that Tehran remains open to negotiations, but stressed that it rejects any externally imposed conditions, stating Iran will not accept “imposition” in peace talks.

Reports suggest US envoy Steve Witkoff has proposed changes to bring Iran’s nuclear program back into negotiations, including restrictions on enriched uranium movement and activity at targeted facilities.

Economic markets briefly reacted to news of Iran’s proposal, with oil prices dipping before stabilizing at levels significantly higher than pre-conflict conditions.

On the ground, civilians in Tehran expressed frustration and uncertainty, with one resident describing the situation as feeling “stuck in purgatory,” while warning that renewed conflict remains a possibility.

As diplomatic efforts continue, both Washington and Tehran remain locked in a complex standoff shaped by military pressure, regional instability, and unresolved negotiation terms.
