Marshall Islands Tanker Crosses Strait of Hormuz as Iran-US Tensions Persist Over Maritime Security

A Marshall Islands-flagged tanker, the Sarv Shakti, carrying 46,313 metric tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for India, successfully crossed the strategic Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, according to India’s shipping ministry. The vessel, which has 20 crew members including 18 Indian nationals, is expected to arrive at the port of Visakhapatnam on May 13.

The safe passage comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region involving Iran and the United States, despite a reported ceasefire. Maritime security concerns remain high due to continued political friction and discussions around control of the vital shipping route.

According to reports cited by Axios, Iran has proposed a new diplomatic initiative through Pakistani mediators aimed at reopening negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal reportedly suggests separating maritime access discussions from nuclear negotiations, which would be addressed at a later stage. The information was attributed to U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

The report also suggests that U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to convene a Situation Room meeting with senior national security officials to review the stalled negotiations and determine next steps. One source indicated that the administration is evaluating options related to ongoing maritime pressure and regional strategy.

Trump has previously indicated support for maintaining pressure on Iran through naval measures and economic restrictions, stating in a Fox News interview that continued maritime blockades could influence Tehran’s decisions in the coming weeks.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy transit route, remains under close international watch as diplomatic and military tensions continue to shape shipping security in the region.
