Trump Warns of Possible New Strikes on Iran Amid Conditional Nuclear and Shipping Deal Talks

03 May, 2026 11:39

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that he has been briefed on a proposed agreement with Iran but is still waiting for the final wording, while warning that military action could resume if Tehran does not comply with expectations.

Trump emphasized uncertainty over the current diplomatic process, saying: “They told me about the concept of the deal. They’re going to give me the exact wording now.” He also expressed skepticism about the proposal’s viability, adding on social media that he does not believe Iran has “paid a big enough price” for its actions.

When asked whether the United States could restart strikes on Iran, Trump responded: “I don’t want to say that. I mean, I can’t tell that to a reporter. If they misbehave, if they do something bad, right now we’ll see. But it’s a possibility that could happen.”

Meanwhile, a senior Iranian official said Tehran had put forward a proposal—previously rejected by Trump—that would reopen shipping in the Strait of Hormuz while lifting the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports. The plan reportedly delays nuclear negotiations to a later stage.

Iran’s foreign ministry has indicated readiness for diplomacy, provided Washington adjusts its current approach. Iranian media also described a broader 14-point proposal, including unfreezing assets, lifting sanctions, and ending regional hostilities.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a central pressure point, as it handles a significant share of global oil shipments. Disruptions have already contributed to rising energy prices and increased economic concerns worldwide.

Despite ongoing tensions, both sides have shown limited openness to negotiation, though major gaps remain—particularly over Iran’s nuclear program and U.S. demands that Tehran never acquire nuclear weapons.

A senior Iranian official, speaking anonymously, said the latest proposal aims to shift nuclear discussions to a later phase to make early agreement easier, while securing guarantees against future attacks and easing maritime restrictions.
