President Zardari approves Sitara-e-Shujaat for Liaqat Shaheed for averting major attack

Liaqat’s instinct to stop a stranger in a field saved lives he would never know about. Pakistan has now given his sacrifice a name worth remembering.
There was no training, no weapon, and no backup. Just a retired Pakistan Railways employee who noticed something wrong about a man moving through fields near Khushal Garh Bridge and decided to ask questions instead of walking away. That decision cost Liaqat his life. It almost certainly saved many others.
President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the Sitara-e-Shujaat — Star of Courage — for Liaqat Shaheed, the civilian whose intervention stopped a Fitna al-Khawarij suicide bomber from reaching what security sources indicate was a more populated target. The award, granted on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recommendation, is one of Pakistan’s highest civil and military honors for bravery.
What Actually Happened at the Inter-Provincial Border
The incident took place in the boundary zone between Punjab’s Jand tehsil and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Khushal Garh Bridge area — a geographic seam between two provinces where administrative jurisdiction overlaps and security coverage can be uneven. The attacker, identified as a Fitna al-Khawarij operative, was moving through agricultural fields rather than a main road — a route selection consistent with an operative trying to avoid checkpoints.
Liaqat, a local resident who knew the area and its people, encountered the stranger and did what civilians in high-vigilance communities are encouraged to do: he asked for identification. The militant responded by detonating his explosives. Liaqat was killed instantly. The bomber died in the same blast. No one else died.
Security sources have not disclosed the intended target, but the characterization of the incident as averting “a major loss of life” by both the president and official security statements suggests the attacker was not operating without a destination in mind.
