UNAMA raises concerns over situation in Afghanistan

UNAMA reveals dire situation of Afghan people
The latest quarterly report (January to March) released by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) presents a serious picture of state control and restrictions under the Taliban administration. The report also challenges claims that the Taliban have transformed into a more moderate group.
Restrictions on Women Continue for Fifth Year
According to the report, restrictions on Afghan women in education, employment, and freedom of movement have now continued for a fifth year.
In provinces such as Uruzgan, Paktia, Kandahar, and Ghazni, women are reportedly not allowed to visit hospitals or go shopping without a male guardian (mahram). These restrictions have gone beyond legal limits and have become a form of social control.
Former Military Personnel Still at Risk
The Taliban had announced a general amnesty when they came to power, but the report states that former Afghan military personnel are still being targeted. UNAMA has verified cases including 23 arrests, nine incidents of severe torture, and five killings.
Media Restrictions and Suppression of Dissent
Independent media continues to face pressure. The broadcast of the TV channel “Rah-e-Farda” remains suspended due to its critical reporting. New criminal laws reportedly make criticism of the Taliban regime and expression of dissent punishable offenses, effectively limiting free speech.
Experts Warn of Growing Crisis
Experts believe that Afghanistan is moving toward deeper humanitarian crisis, international isolation, and internal suppression. They warn that restricting basic freedoms creates an environment of fear and silence, which blocks social and economic development.
The UNAMA report sends a clear message to the international community that the human rights situation in Afghanistan is not improving, and silence from the world may be seen as indirect support for ongoing violations.
