NDMA Issues Heatwave Alert Across Pakistan as Temperatures to Exceed 42°C from May 19–26
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide heatwave alert warning that Pakistan will experience extremely hot weather conditions from May 19 to May 26.
According to the advisory, temperatures are expected to rise above 42°C in several regions, including Sindh, southern Punjab, and eastern Balochistan. The alert highlights that prolonged exposure to such severe heat could create serious health risks and environmental stress across affected areas.
In Sindh, major cities and districts such as Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Tharparkar, and Mirpurkhas are likely to face intense heat conditions. Similarly, vulnerable districts in Balochistan including Turbat, Sibi, Lasbela, and Dera Murad Jamali are expected to experience extreme temperatures.
Punjab is also under threat, with districts like Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rahim Yar Khan forecast to be significantly affected by the heatwave.
The NDMA has cautioned that high humidity in lower Sindh and dry conditions in Punjab and Balochistan may further intensify heat stress. Health experts warn that children, elderly individuals, and outdoor workers are most at risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke.
Authorities have instructed local administrations to activate emergency heatwave plans, establish cooling centers, and ensure uninterrupted water supply. Citizens are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during peak daytime hours and maintain proper hydration to reduce health risks.
