Iran Warns US of Escalation: Araghchi Signals “Many More Surprises”

20 May, 2026 09:43

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has issued a strong warning to the United States, suggesting that Tehran is prepared for intensified confrontation if Washington considers resuming military pressure against the Islamic Republic.

In a post shared on X, the top Iranian diplomat stated that Iran has “many more surprises” in store for the United States, emphasizing that any future response would be shaped by “lessons learned and knowledge we gained” from previous confrontations with the US.

Araghchi further referenced a recent report acknowledged by the United States Congress, which highlighted significant financial and material losses suffered by the US Air Force during a 40-day period of conflict. The report claimed that at least 42 aircraft were lost, with total damages estimated at around $2.6 billion.

The losses reportedly included advanced military assets such as F-15E Strike Eagle jets, an F-35A Lightning II, A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft, KC-135 refueling planes, MQ-9 Reaper drones, and other surveillance and support systems. Lawmakers also warned that the actual cost could be much higher, potentially exceeding $7 billion when long-term replacement and production restart expenses are considered.

The report added that the destruction of certain systems, including the E-3 Sentry aircraft, could force the revival of previously canceled programs, significantly increasing defense spending.

Araghchi commented on the report, stating:
“Months after initiation of war on Iran, US Congress acknowledges loss of dozens of aircraft worth billions,” and added, “Our powerful Armed Forces are confirmed as 1st to strike down a touted F-35.”

The escalation followed a joint military aggression involving the United States and the Israeli regime on February 28, which triggered Iranian missile and drone responses targeting regional military assets.

The conflict has also led Iran to tighten control over strategic maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route. This move has contributed to volatility in global energy markets and rising fuel prices, particularly affecting economic conditions in the United States.
