Government Issues Cybersecurity Advisory Over QR Code Verification in Electricity Bills Amid Fraud Alerts
The Ministry of Energy’s Power Division has issued an important advisory for electricity consumers regarding the newly introduced QR code verification system on electricity bills.
Officials warned that cybercriminals are attempting to exploit consumers by misusing QR codes under the guise of government subsidy schemes. The spokesperson stated that malicious actors are trying to steal personal data by directing users to suspicious links.
According to the advisory, consumers are being asked to click on fraudulent links and complete a four-step process, after which they are instructed to enter a six-digit code. The Power Division clarified that this method is illegal and fraudulent, urging citizens not to share personal information on any unofficial platform.
The spokesperson emphasized that only official government channels linked directly to electricity bills should be used for registration and verification purposes. Law enforcement agencies have already been informed about the cybercriminal activity.
At the same time, the federal government has introduced a QR code-based registration system for electricity subsidies. Under this system, subsidised consumers are required to scan the QR code printed on their monthly bills to complete registration through an official online portal.
The Power Division stated that the initiative aims to ensure transparency and that subsidies are delivered to deserving low-income households. Officials also clarified that the system does not indicate any withdrawal of existing subsidies.
The spokesperson added: “This registration process is only intended to ensure that relief reaches poor and low-electricity-consuming households.” They further clarified: “It should be noted that this does not mean the elimination of subsidies in any way.”
Consumers are strongly advised to remain cautious and avoid sharing personal data on any unauthorized platform claiming to offer subsidy registration services.
