Severe heatwave alert issued as temperatures rise across Punjab, Sindh
The Meteorological Department has issued a severe heatwave alert, warning that temperatures will rise sharply in many parts of Pakistan over the coming days.
According to the forecast, temperatures in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, and Gujrat are expected to remain between 41°C and 44°C from June 8 to June 10.
A stronger heatwave is expected in central Punjab, where temperatures could reach 44°C to 48°C in cities including Lahore, Okara, Kasur, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, and Jhang from June 8 to June 11.
The weather department has advised people to avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day, drink plenty of water, and take necessary precautions to stay safe from extreme heat.
In Karachi, very hot weather is expected from June 8 to June 12, with temperatures likely to stay between 40°C and 43°C. Warm conditions may continue during the night, with minimum temperatures also expected to increase.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, temperatures are forecast to remain 4°C to 6°C above normal from June 8 to June 11. Daytime temperatures in the plains are likely to range between 41°C and 46°C.
Meanwhile, temperatures in Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to remain between 37°C and 40°C from June 8 to June 10.
Other parts of Punjab, including Toba Tek Singh, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Khanewal, Pakpattan, and Rahim Yar Khan, may also experience temperatures between 44°C and 48°C from June 8 to June 11.
Similar temperatures are expected in Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Layyah, Bhakkar, and Kot Addu during the same period.
The Meteorological Department has urged citizens to stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, and follow safety measures as the heatwave affects large parts of the country.
