Pakistan Played Key Mediation Role in US-Iran Crisis, Security Sources Say

16 June, 2026 17:19

Islamabad: Pakistan played a significant mediatory role in efforts aimed at preventing further escalation in the recent US-Iran crisis, with the country’s primary objective being the promotion of peace and regional stability, senior security officials said during an interaction with journalists.

According to security sources, Pakistan was dealing with an exceptionally complex diplomatic issue and fulfilled all the requirements expected of a mediator. They stressed that Pakistan was not interested in “headline diplomacy” and that the international community was gradually recognizing the country’s constructive contribution.

Officials warned that failure to halt the conflict could have resulted in serious regional consequences. “The greatest victory is one achieved without fighting,” a senior official remarked, adding that certain actors were still attempting to undermine ongoing efforts toward stability.

Security sources noted that several regional countries, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, also deserved credit for supporting peace initiatives and responding positively to Pakistan’s calls for de-escalation.

They emphasized that Pakistan maintains independent relations with Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United States, while also seeking positive and cooperative ties with Afghanistan.

Responding to questions regarding Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s visit to India, officials said Pakistan viewed international diplomacy with a broad perspective and was not concerned about meetings between sovereign states. They maintained that Pakistan continued to enjoy strong bilateral relations with various countries.

Counterterrorism Operations

Security officials revealed that as of June 15, 2026, Pakistan had conducted 32,092 intelligence-based operations against terrorist elements. During the same period, 2,170 terrorist incidents were recorded, with 64 percent occurring in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 34 percent in Balochistan.

According to the data shared, 1,861 terrorists were killed, while 640 members of the armed forces, law enforcement agencies and civilians lost their lives. Officials stated that 862 militants were eliminated in operations conducted in Afghanistan, while 999 were killed inside Pakistan.

Kashmir and Internal Security

Addressing issues related to Kashmir, security sources stated that Pakistan’s dispute was with what they described as a “terrorist regime” and not with the people of the region. They alleged that restrictions on freedom of movement and expression continued in Indian-administered Kashmir and questioned whether political and financial measures could alter public sentiment toward Pakistan.

Officials further claimed that after failing to achieve its objectives through military means in Kashmir, India had attempted to create instability in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Regarding recent protests and political activity in Azad Kashmir, security sources alleged that certain groups were pursuing agendas beyond legitimate rights movements. They claimed that authorities had exercised restraint and preferred dialogue, while maintaining that any unlawful activities would be addressed through constitutional and legal mechanisms.

The officials also highlighted evolving security challenges, noting that modern warfare increasingly relies on advanced technologies. They acknowledged budgetary constraints but said both military and political leadership were aware of the need to strengthen national defence capabilities.

PTI Founder Meeting Denied

Security sources categorically denied reports of any meeting with the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). They reiterated that all individuals involved in or responsible for the May 9 incidents would be brought before the courts and held accountable under the law.
