Karachi Bus Owners Announce Indefinite Strike from June 18 Over Traffic Challans and Heavy Fines

17 June, 2026 10:13

Bus owners in Karachi have announced an indefinite suspension of public transport services beginning June 18, in protest against what they describe as excessive traffic challans and disproportionately heavy fines imposed on public transport operators.

The Karachi Bus Owners Association formally declared its decision to withdraw bus services across the city, citing mounting frustration over increasingly strict traffic enforcement and the rising financial burden of penalties on vehicle owners.

Farooq Ahmed, President of the Karachi Bus Owners Association, addressed the issue directly, calling on all bus owners to keep their vehicles off the road starting June 18 in solidarity with the protest movement. He made clear that the strike would not be lifted until the relevant authorities respond to the association’s concerns and formally agree to its demands.

The planned withdrawal of services is projected to severely impact thousands of commuters across Karachi who depend on public buses as their primary mode of daily transportation.

The strike announcement comes in the wake of new traffic enforcement measures introduced by Karachi traffic police in May. DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah had acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating that wrong-way driving had emerged as a major road safety concern in the city. He noted that traffic officers had been equipped with modern enforcement technology to issue challans more efficiently throughout Karachi.

DIG Shah also revealed that a dedicated Special Traffic Flow Unit was being readied for deployment on key roads in Karachi to strengthen traffic discipline. Officials confirmed that approximately 36 locations across the city had been identified as hotspots for wrong-way driving violations.
