G7 Backs US-Iran Peace Agreement as Historic Breakthrough, Pushes for Hormuz Access

The world’s seven largest economies have thrown their collective weight behind the US-Iran peace framework — and wasted no time attaching conditions of their own.

G7 leaders formally welcomed the agreement between Washington and Tehran, declaring it a historic opportunity with consequences extending well beyond the two signatory nations. Their statement signals that the Western-led economic order is prepared to support the deal’s implementation — but equally prepared to hold both parties accountable to its terms.

Nuclear Containment as the Central Prize

G7 heads of government framed the agreement primarily through the lens of non-proliferation. Their official position characterizes the deal as a meaningful mechanism for preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons — a concern that has driven Western policy toward Tehran for over two decades.

This framing matters strategically. By anchoring their endorsement in nuclear security rather than regional politics, G7 leaders provide themselves political cover domestically while aligning with the deal’s most internationally defensible objective. It also signals to Iran that the economic rewards on offer are explicitly tied to verifiable nuclear restraint.

Hormuz: The Economic Lifeline Demand

The bloc’s most operationally significant demand concerns the Strait of Hormuz. G7 leaders called for immediate, unconditional passage for all international shipping — free from taxes, fees, or interference. The Strait channels roughly one-fifth of global oil supply, and any disruption ripples instantly through energy markets worldwide.

This demand reflects hard-learned lessons from recent years, during which Iranian threats against Hormuz shipping were used as leverage in nuclear negotiations. The G7 wants that leverage permanently removed, not temporarily suspended.

Lebanon and Gaza Enter the Frame

The G7 statement expanded beyond the bilateral US-Iran framework to address two active conflict zones. On Lebanon, leaders backed an immediate ceasefire and explicitly supported the Lebanese government’s efforts to disarm Hezbollah — a politically loaded demand that places Western powers squarely behind Beirut’s sovereignty over its own territory.

On Gaza, the bloc called for accelerated humanitarian aid delivery and an immediate halt to violence in the West Bank. These additions transform what began as a bilateral nuclear and security agreement into a broader regional peace architecture — one with multiple moving parts and equally multiple failure points.

What G7 Endorsement Actually Delivers

Diplomatic endorsement from the G7 carries tangible weight. It signals that sanctions relief for Iran will not face coordinated European resistance, that financial institutions in member states can begin engaging with Iranian counterparts once terms are met, and that the deal has enough multilateral legitimacy to survive changes in any single government.

It also places pressure on outliers. Nations that might seek to undermine the agreement — whether through sanctions evasion, arms supply, or proxy escalation — now do so against the stated position of the world’s dominant economic bloc.

The Road to Geneva

With the signing ceremony scheduled for June 19 in Switzerland, the G7 endorsement provides crucial diplomatic momentum. Whether that momentum survives contact with implementation — verification disputes, Hezbollah’s response, and Congressional scrutiny in Washington — will define whether this historic moment becomes a lasting settlement or another collapsed framework.
