Shehbaz Sharif, CDF Asim Munir Head to Switzerland for US–Iran Talks

According to the Foreign Office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, together with Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir is heading to Bürgenstock, Switzerland to join key talks on implementing the Islamabad MoU.

The talks include important delegations from Iran, Qatar, and the US, which are taking place for the first time since the Islamabad MoU was signed on 17 June 2026, and reflects a fresh phase in ongoing diplomatic efforts. According to Pakistan, it will remain engaged in supporting progress on Iran–US understandings aiming to ensure peace and stability in the region.

On the sidelines of the visit, M Shehbaz Sharif is expected to conduct separate bilateral talks with representatives of Iran, Qatar, Switzerland, and the United States. They are intended to promote dialogue while underlining Pakistan’s position in supporting peaceful negotiations and sustained regional cooperation.

Pakistan has pointed to its key role throughout the process, including hosting earlier US–Iran negotiations to maintaining regular diplomatic contact that helped lead to the Islamabad MoU. According to officials, Pakistan’s strategy as fair, constructive, and centered on lowering tensions through talks.

At the same time, US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have arrived in Switzerland for the negotiations. US Vice President Vance is also expected to join the talks later. These American officials are expected to take part in discussions focused on the next steps of a possible agreement with Iran.

Iranian officials have also reached Switzerland, and are engaging in technical-level talks taking place in Bürgenstock. As stated by Swiss authorities, the Iranian delegation was greeted upon arrival and has already started taking part in the ongoing process.

The Switzerland meetings are seen as a significant continuation of the diplomatic efforts under the Islamabad MoU, intended to build trust, support cooperation, and help move toward a potential Iran–US deal.
