Iran Puts Ceasefire Compliance at Center of Key U.S. Talks

21 June, 2026 16:03

Iran has said that its upcoming negotiations with the United States in Switzerland will primarily focus on what it describes as the failure to implement the first clause of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Speaking ahead of the talks in Burgenstock on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated that the start of negotiations on a final agreement depends on the fulfillment of several conditions, including a halt to hostilities across all fronts, particularly in Lebanon.

Baghaei argued that the first clause of the MoU has not been enforced, claiming that continued violations by Israel have prevented progress toward the agreement’s objectives. He said Iran believes the United States has either been unable or unwilling to ensure compliance with the commitment, making the issue the central topic of discussions between the two delegations. According to the spokesman, the ongoing situation has raised serious concerns about the implementation of the accord.

The Iranian official also stressed that Tehran remains committed to pursuing the agreement while closely monitoring the other side’s obligations. He said the planned meeting reflects Iran’s determination to hold all parties accountable for their commitments and emphasized that Tehran never expected the document to be implemented automatically. “We never forget previous experiences,” Baghaei said, underscoring Iran’s cautious approach as negotiations continue.
