Iran’s Military Influence Framed Around Deterrence Not Expansion

22 June, 2026 15:15

In Western political and media discourse, Iran is often portrayed as an “irrational actor” influenced by ideological extremism and regional aggression. However, analysts and regional scholars note that this framing is widely contested and does not fully reflect the evolution of Iran’s security strategy or military planning.

Following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which overthrew the monarchy of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Iran entered a prolonged period of isolation, sanctions, and external pressure. The subsequent Iran–Iraq War (1980–1988), launched under Saddam Hussein, deeply shaped Tehran’s strategic thinking and reinforced the perception among Iranian leadership that direct conventional warfare against technologically superior adversaries would be unsustainable.

As a result, Iran’s military doctrine has increasingly emphasized deterrence, asymmetric warfare, and strategic resilience rather than territorial expansion or conventional battlefield dominance. This approach is reflected in its reliance on proxy forces, missile capabilities, and regional influence networks designed to counterbalance adversaries without direct large-scale conventional confrontation.
