Andy Burnham Enters Race to Succeed Starmer as Labour Leader

23 June, 2026 16:36

Keir Starmer announced his resignation shortly after 09:30 BST on Monday, confirming that a new leader would be chosen by 1st September, although the process could conclude sooner if there is no leadership contest. In an emotional farewell speech, Starmer paid tribute to his family before later hosting staff and colleagues alongside his wife, Victoria Starmer, at a gathering in the garden of 10 Downing Street.

Soon after the announcement, Andy Burnham declared his intention to stand for the Labour leadership. Speaking after travelling from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston to be sworn in as an MP, Burnham said it was too early to discuss the possibility of a general election and that his focus was on the leadership race.

Burnham quickly secured support from senior Labour figures, including former health secretary Wes Streeting. Later in the day, he was pictured alongside hundreds of Labour MPs at Westminster Hall, a display widely seen as an early sign of momentum behind his campaign to succeed Starmer as leader of the Labour Party.
