Lost Hiroshima Survivor Memoir Found in US Archive After Decades

A long-lost memoir by Hiroshima survivor Kiyoshi Tanimoto has been discovered in a United States archive nearly eight decades after it was written. Completed in 1947, the manuscript provides a firsthand account of the devastation caused by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and offers a rare early testimony from a survivor of the attack.

Tanimoto, a Methodist minister who helped rescue victims in the aftermath of the bombing, described the immense destruction, suffering, and chaos that followed the explosion on 6 August 1945. Historians believe the memoir is one of the earliest and most detailed personal records of the disaster. The manuscript is scheduled to be published in August, allowing readers to access an important historical document that had remained largely unknown for decades.

The discovery has generated significant interest among scholars and the public alike. In addition to its publication, the memoir is being adapted into a film, bringing Tanimoto’s experiences to a wider audience and preserving the memories of those who lived through one of the most devastating events in modern history, the Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
