EU Faces Criticism Over Plans to Host Afghan Taliban in Brussel

24 June, 2026 11:33

The European Union is facing strong criticism over reported plans to host representatives of the Afghan Taliban in Brussels. Human rights campaigners and several members of the European Parliament (MEPs) argue that such a meeting would risk legitimising a regime accused of systematically restricting the rights of women and girls since returning to power in Afghanistan in 2021.

Critics say engaging with the Afghan Taliban at a high-profile venue could normalise policies that have effectively excluded women from many areas of public life, including education, employment, and political participation. Rights groups have urged EU officials to ensure that any diplomatic engagement does not undermine international pressure on the Taliban over human rights concerns.

Supporters of dialogue argue that communication with the Afghan Taliban is necessary to address humanitarian issues, regional stability, and the delivery of aid to Afghanistan. However, opponents maintain that any formal meeting should be accompanied by clear demands for improvements in human rights, particularly regarding the treatment of women and girls.
