9th Muharram processions held across Pakistan under tight security
Ninth Muharram processions are being held across Pakistan today, with strict security arrangements in place to ensure peaceful observance.
Authorities have deployed thousands of police and security personnel, while sabeels have been set up in different cities. Processions and majalis are taking place in major cities including Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Jhang, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur and Hangu.
Punjab
In Lahore, the main Zuljanah procession started from Islampura, while another major procession began from Pando Street and will end at Khaima-e-Sadaat.
According to Punjab Police, 1,697 processions and 3,869 majalis are being held across the province today. Among them, 208 processions and 337 majalis have been declared A-category events.
More than 70,000 police officers and personnel have been deployed across Punjab to provide security.
“We will ensure the peaceful observance of 9th Muharram with the cooperation of community leaders, administration and security institutions,” the IG Punjab said.
Authorities are using CCTV cameras, walk-through gates, metal detectors and other modern equipment for security checks. Snipers and plain-clothes commandos have also been deployed along procession routes.
Double riding remains banned across the province, except for senior citizens, women and law enforcement personnel.
Sindh
In Karachi, the central majlis is being held at Nishtar Park, where Allama Shehenshah Hussain Naqvi is addressing mourners.
The main 9th Muharram procession will begin from Nishtar Park and pass through its traditional route before ending at Hussainia Iranian in Kharadar.
More than 5,000 police officers and personnel have been deployed in Karachi, while Rangers are also assisting with security duties.
Authorities have closed roads and markets along the procession routes. Mobile phone services have also been suspended in and around Nishtar Park, while MA Jinnah Road has been closed to traffic.
In Sukkur, the historic 500-year-old Nau Dhala Tazia procession has started from Imambargah Shah Iraq and will reach Karbala Ground later in the day. The traditional Nau Dhala Tazia procession in Rohri has also continued along its route.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan
In Hangu, the 9th Muharram procession started from Mohalla Syedan Ghari Bazaar and reached the central Imambargah through its designated route.
Authorities said strict security arrangements have been made for the procession.
In Balochistan, more than 32,000 security personnel have been deployed across the province to protect Muharram processions and gatherings.
Islamabad
In Islamabad, a 9th Muharram procession is being taken out from Imambargah Isna Ashari G-6 as part of the religious observances.
