Veteran Filmmaker and Actor K. Bhagyaraj Dies at 73

A well-known Tamil cinema icon, a filmmaker, actor and writer K. Bhagyaraj, has passed away at the age of 73 after a heart attack after dedicating more than 50 years to Tamil cinema.

His death has come as a huge loss to the Tamil film industry, as Bhagyaraj’s death comes shortly after veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja passed away.

In 1977, Bhagyaraj began his career with a small role in 16 Vayathinile. Bhagyaraj went on to assist Bharathiraja and wrote dialogues and screenplays for many of his films. In 1979, Bhagyaraj debuted as a director with Suvarilladha Chiththirangal. The film marked the beginning of his successful career behind the camera.

Some of Bhagyaraj’s best-known films as a director and actor include Oru Kai Osai , Mouna Geethangal , Andha 7 Naatkal , Darling Darling Darling , Mundhanai Mudichu , Chinna Veedu , Enga Chinna Rasa and Oorukku Upadesam . He gained recognition for creating family entertainers with sharp dialogues and meaningful social messages.

In a career spanning five decades, Bhagyaraj built an impressive career, starring in over 75 films and directing more than 20. During his 50-year milestone celebration in cinema earlier this year, Bhagyaraj revealed plans to make a comeback as a director with a new film and a web series. His final directorial film was Siddhu +2 in 2010, Bhagyaraj shifted his focus to supporting roles, including a notable performance alongside Dhanush in Kuberaa.

Bhagyaraj leaves behind his wife, actor Poornima Jayaram, daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj, and son Shanthnoo Bhagyaraj, who is also active in the Tamil film industry.
