ECP Summons Islamabad Officials, Says Further Delay in Local Polls Is Unacceptable

01 July, 2026 17:56

Pakistan’s Election Commission (ECP) has issued its reserved verdict on the long-delayed local government elections in Islamabad, declaring that any further delay in holding the polls is unacceptable. The commission has summoned the Chief Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad to appear in person at the next hearing on July 7.

In its ruling, the ECP emphasized that conducting local government elections in a timely manner is a constitutional obligation and expressed serious concern over what it described as the federal government’s lack of cooperation. The commission said delays on the part of the government have continued to impede the electoral process in the federal capital.

The ECP also directed its secretary to immediately contact the Prime Minister’s adviser to facilitate progress on the matter. The next hearing in the Islamabad local government elections case has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on July 7, 2026.
