Trump Announces Lifting of Syria Sanctions, Warns Iran Over Nuclear Program

WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has stated lifting the sanctions imposed on Syria, describing the decision would benefit the country. Trump said Syria could also potentially be removed from the list of state sponsors of terrorism and praised the Syrian president’s performance, claiming the country had become more stable.

Trump said Syria could play a role in helping address issues involving Hezbollah and Lebanon. He also claimed that his administration had made significant progress against Iran, alleging that Tehran had adopted an inappropriate stance and assuring that Iran would not be able to obtain nuclear weapons.

The U.S. president said Washington had identified locations of Iran’s nuclear materials and claimed the materials were stored deep underground, adding that the United States had the equipment needed to remove them. Trump also commented on regional issues, saying he believed Israel would withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon and warn that further attacks on Iran could lead to higher global oil prices. He also criticized the European Union, accusing it of treating the United States unfairly for years.
