Iran Rejects Trump’s Claim That It Requested US Talks

Iran has rejected claims that it asked the United States to restart negotiations, saying it has made no such request.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on Friday, “We have made no request for negotiations with the United States.” He explained that Iran had accepted a request from a regional mediator to visit Tehran, and discussions were held in Mashhad earlier in the day.

Baqaei accused the United States of repeatedly breaking its commitments under the June 17 memorandum of understanding. He said US military attacks this week, along with new sanctions and the cancellation of Iran’s oil sales license, violated the agreement.

He stressed that Iran’s policy is based on “commitment for commitment.” He added, “If the other side violates its commitments, which it has, the Islamic Republic of Iran will take the necessary action, and it has done so. This approach will continue in the future.”

Baqaei also criticized the recent UN Security Council meeting on Iran’s nuclear program, calling it a “repetitive and propaganda move” without any legal basis. He said the meeting produced no meaningful results.

He confirmed that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi will visit Oman on Saturday to discuss the Strait of Hormuz and efforts to ensure safe navigation through the strategic waterway.

His remarks came after US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Iran had asked to continue talks. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!”

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf also said, “confrontation will never end with Iran’s surrender”.

Iran and the United States signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding on June 17 aimed at working toward a final peace agreement. Despite ongoing diplomatic contacts, tensions between the two countries remain high.
