Qatar’s Former Emir Sheikh Hamad Passes Away, Pakistan Offers Condolences

On Sunday, the former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani passed away at 74 confirmed by Qatar’s Amiri Diwan.

He passed leadership to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the current Emir, after his 18-year rule as Qatar’s Emir from 1995 to 2013.

Amiri Diwan stated sorrow over his death, praying for his soul and granting his lasting contributions to Qatar and its people.

During Sheikh Hamad’s rule, Qatar witnessed major progress and transformation, helping the country gain global recognition. He strengthened the country’s international standing by supporting the growth of Al Jazeera and leading the successful campaign to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Qatar may be a small nation, a population of over 2.5 million, Qatar has gained global importance through its LNG exports, growing investment sector, and active role in regional diplomacy.

After ruling Qatar for nearly two decades, Sheikh Hamad ended his rule in June 2013 by passing the leadership to his son, the then Crown Prince Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar expressed deep sorrow over the former Emir’s passing and offered condolences to Qatar’s leadership and people.

In a post on X, Dar said he was deeply saddened by the news and praised Sheikh Hamad’s role in Qatar’s development and his efforts to strengthen relations between Pakistan and Qatar.

He also highlighted the late Emir’s visionary leadership and contributions toward regional peace, saying his legacy would be remembered for years.

On behalf of the Pakistani government and people, Dar extended condolences to the Al Thani family, the Emir, and the people of Qatar, praying for the departed soul and offering strength to the bereaved family.
