US Visa Appointments Worldwide Disrupted as State Department Launches New Consular Training

WASHINGTON: The Trump administration has temporarily postponed or rescheduled some US visa appointments worldwide as the State Department rolls out a new global training programme for consular officers, creating fresh uncertainty for applicants seeking legal entry into the United States.

A State Department spokesperson said US embassies and consulates have begun adjusting visa-service schedules to accommodate the training sessions. The department has not disclosed how long the programme will last or when affected appointments will return to normal.

According to the State Department, the training is aimed at helping consular officers more effectively assess whether applicants could potentially become dependent on US public benefits and ensuring that visa applications are reviewed “comprehensively and consistently.”

Reports indicate that some immigrant visa applicants with previously scheduled interviews have received notifications informing them that their appointments are being rescheduled. Those affected are expected to receive new interview dates once they become available.

The development comes amid the Trump administration’s broader push to tighten US immigration controls. While the administration has intensified enforcement against undocumented immigration, it has also introduced stricter scrutiny and additional requirements affecting some legal immigration pathways.

Several elements of the administration’s immigration agenda have faced challenges in federal courts. Most recently, a US judge struck down a policy that had suspended the issuance of immigrant visas to applicants from 75 countries, ruling that the measure exceeded the statutory authority granted to the Secretary of State.

Human rights organisations have also raised concerns over aspects of the administration’s immigration policies, particularly their potential impact on due process, free speech and minority communities. The Trump administration, however, maintains that enhanced screening and immigration enforcement are necessary to protect national security and US interests.

The latest scheduling changes could mean additional delays for applicants already facing lengthy visa-processing times. However, the move does not amount to an indefinite worldwide suspension of all US visa services. At this stage, the disruption primarily involves the temporary postponement or rescheduling of appointments while consular officers undergo the new training programme.
