Iran Targets US Command Center in Syria, Signals Strong Response to Washington

17 July, 2026 11:21

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claim they struck a US special operations command center in Syria’s Tanf region, describing the attack as the eleventh wave of what they’re calling Operation Nasr 2, launched in response to ongoing American strikes. The claim has not been independently verified by US officials or other outside sources.

According to the IRGC’s own statement, the strike was carried out in retaliation for personnel killed in an earlier attack in the Bampur area of Iranshahr. The Guards said the operation destroyed a radar system and multiple helicopters used for special operations, and claimed a large number of American personnel were killed — figures that, again, come solely from Iran’s own military communications and remain unconfirmed by independent reporting.

The claim arrives amid an already sharp escalation between the two countries, with both sides making increasingly forceful public statements about strikes and capabilities in recent days. Iranian military statements throughout this conflict have frequently paired claimed operational successes with broader strategic threats, a pattern consistent with this latest announcement.

The IRGC also reiterated its position on the Strait of Hormuz, claiming Iranian forces maintain full control of the waterway and vowing that not a single drop of oil or gas will be allowed to pass through the region as long as what it calls American aggression continues. That claim aligns with Iran’s repeated warnings in recent days that Hormuz would remain closed until US strikes stop, though the practical extent of Iranian control over the strait — a waterway also patrolled by US and allied naval forces — remains contested.

Tanf holds particular strategic significance as a longstanding US military presence in southeastern Syria, positioned near the Iraqi and Jordanian borders specifically to monitor Iranian-linked movement across the region. A confirmed strike there would represent a significant escalation given the base’s role in US regional operations, which is part of why independent verification of this claim matters before it can be treated as established fact.

Given the pattern of competing, unverified claims from both Tehran and Washington throughout this conflict, this report reflects Iran’s own account of the strike. Confirmation from US Central Command or other independent sources would be needed to establish the actual scope and outcome of the reported attack.
