Four Bodies Recovered in Broad Peak Rescue Operation After Avalanche

SKARDU: Rescue teams have recovered the bodies of four mountaineers following a deadly avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan’s northern region, rescue sources said on Friday.

Broad Peak, located in the Karakoram mountain range, stands at 8,047 metres and is the 12th-highest mountain in the world. It is considered one of Pakistan’s most difficult peaks for climbers because of its extreme altitude and harsh weather conditions.

According to rescue sources, one of the four deceased mountaineers is Pakistani. The identities of the other three victims will be announced after their formal identification and official confirmation.

The avalanche struck during an international climbing expedition and left several mountaineers missing. Search and rescue teams are continuing their efforts to find those who remain unaccounted for.

The missing climbers reportedly included five Nepali mountaineers, Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi from Hunza, Omani climber Natheerah, American climber Mallory Geis, one Chinese climber and another foreign mountaineer whose identity has not yet been confirmed. Renowned Nepalese-born British mountaineer Nirmal Purja was also reported among those missing.

The Alpine Club of Pakistan and rescue officials earlier said that contact with the international expedition was lost after the avalanche hit Broad Peak.

Officials said communication with the expedition has not been restored, while difficult weather conditions are making rescue operations more challenging.

Further information about the recovered bodies and the identities of the victims is expected once the formal identification process is completed.
