Federal Govt Completes Preparations for Emergency, Governor’s Rule in KP
The federal government has completed preparations for a possible emergency or governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), according to a news report citing sources. However, the final decision will reportedly depend on the outcome of political contacts between the government and the opposition.
The preparations include proposed administrative changes involving deputy commissioners and secretaries. Lists of candidates for regional and district police leadership positions have also been prepared, the sources said.
A proposal to initially impose an emergency in 12 districts of the province is also under consideration.
According to the sources, the government will not take either step if negotiations with the opposition, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), are successful.
Formal talks between the government and opposition are not taking place, but back-channel contacts are continuing, the sources added.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called a meeting on KP’s security situation for Saturday. The possible imposition of an emergency is expected to be discussed at the meeting, according to the sources.
Federal cabinet members have been told to remain in Islamabad. A cabinet meeting is also expected to be held soon.
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and senior military officials are expected to attend the meeting. Reports from national security institutions will also be reviewed, the sources said.
Meanwhile, senior PTI leaders are expected to meet KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Saturday to discuss the political situation and the party’s next steps.
PTI chairman Barrister Gohar and other party leaders are expected to brief Afridi on messages received at the federal level.
The meeting is also expected to discuss the party’s long march and possible future decisions, the sources added.
