Ishaq Dar Orders Subcommittees to Fast-Track 2027 Games Prep

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting Monday to push forward preparations for the 14th South Asian Games, ordering the creation of dedicated subcommittees to handle financing, infrastructure, athlete training and logistics roughly 19 months before Pakistan is due to host the region.

Dar told participants that timely planning and close coordination between stakeholders would determine whether Pakistan delivers the Games to what he called the highest standards. He framed the event as more than a sporting fixture, describing it as a chance for Pakistan to showcase athletic talent, hospitality and organizational capacity while sending what he termed a message of peace and goodwill to the region.

The meeting drew a notably senior lineup: SAPM Tariq Bajwa, Pakistan Olympic Association president Arif Saeed, the IPC secretary, the Pakistan Sports Board’s director general, Finance Ministry officials, and representatives from the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments. That spread of provincial and federal officials in one room signals Islamabad is treating the Games as a whole-of-government project rather than a sports ministry initiative alone — a necessity given the Games are set to span multiple cities.

This is Dar’s second public push on Games logistics in six weeks. In early July, a committee under him decided to establish a SAARC Games Secretariat in Islamabad and fast-track upgrades to the Pakistan Sports Complex. Monday’s session builds directly on that groundwork, moving from establishing infrastructure to assigning oversight across the specific workstreams — finance, venues, training, logistics — that will need to run in parallel for the timeline to hold.

The stakes are regional as much as domestic. South Asia’s National Olympic Committees confirmed in February that the Games will run March 23–31, 2027, split across Lahore, Islamabad and Faisalabad, with roughly 27 sports on the program including eight new additions. Pakistan last hosted in 2004; regional political tension since has repeatedly complicated South Asian sporting cooperation, making a smooth, on-schedule Games as much a diplomatic signal as an athletic one.

Whether Pakistan can execute on Dar’s timeline is the open question going forward. Venue upgrades, secretariat staffing and finance planning all now sit with subcommittees that must report progress well before test events and athlete arrivals begin in 2026 and early 2027. With participating NOCs from Bangladesh, India, Maldives and Sri Lanka watching preparation closely, the coming months of subcommittee work will likely matter more to the Games’ credibility than Monday’s announcement itself.
