Hind Rajab Final Moments Became a Symbol of Gaza’s Suffering – Israel Admits Gunfire

20 August, 2026 13:05

Jerusalem: The Israeli military has acknowledged that its troops fired on a vehicle carrying five-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab in Gaza in January 2024, announcing a criminal investigation into the incident that sparked international outrage.

Hind Rajab was trapped inside a car with members of her family after the vehicle came under fire while they were attempting to flee Gaza City. She later made a desperate hours-long emergency call to the Palestine Red Crescent, pleading for help.

Her body was recovered days later from the bullet-riddled vehicle, alongside the bodies of six relatives and two Red Crescent paramedics who had been dispatched to rescue her.

The Israeli military had previously denied that its forces were present in the area when the incident occurred. However, its latest findings reportedly acknowledge that Israeli troops fired at the vehicle, killing five passengers while Hind Rajab and her cousin Layan Hamada initially survived.

According to the Israeli military, the movement of a Red Crescent ambulance was subsequently coordinated to evacuate the victims. The military said a shell was fired toward the ambulance when it arrived at the scene, killing the two paramedics inside.

The case has drawn renewed international attention, particularly because Hind Rajab’s desperate emergency call became a powerful symbol of the humanitarian suffering of Palestinian civilians during the Gaza war.

The Hind Rajab Foundation, which has been pursuing legal action over alleged Israeli violations in Gaza, rejected the Israeli military’s investigation and said it had no confidence in the process, arguing that an internal military probe could not provide genuine accountability.

The Israeli military also announced investigations into several other incidents involving Palestinian civilians and humanitarian workers. However, it declined to open criminal investigations into some high-profile cases, including the deaths of seven workers from World Central Kitchen and four Doctors Without Borders personnel.

The decision drew strong criticism from humanitarian organisations. World Central Kitchen founder José Andrés described the decision as painful and said there was no justification for the attack on his team’s members.

The Israeli military has separately ordered a criminal investigation into the March 2025 killing of Palestinian medical and humanitarian personnel in southern Gaza. The incident involved Red Crescent workers, Gaza Civil Defence personnel and a UNRWA employee whose bodies were later found in a mass grave near Rafah.

The United Nations had previously raised serious concerns over the incident, with UN officials warning that the circumstances surrounding the deaths could amount to potential violations of international humanitarian law.

The admission regarding Hind Rajab has therefore renewed calls for independent investigations and accountability over the deaths of Palestinian civilians, medical workers and humanitarian personnel in Gaza.
