Iran Adds 290MW to National Grid with Dalahoo Power Plant Steam Unit

Iran has added 290 megawatts (MW) of electricity generation capacity to its national grid following the inauguration of the steam unit at the Dalahoo combined-cycle power plant in western Kermanshah Province. Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi inaugurated the unit on Monday during a two-day visit to the province as part of Government Week celebrations. The newly operational steam unit does not require additional fuel, instead recovering waste heat from the plant’s existing gas turbines and converting it into additional electricity, thereby improving the facility’s overall efficiency.
The Dalahoo power plant is Iran’s largest combined-cycle facility, with a planned total capacity of approximately 910MW. It consists of two 310MW gas units and the newly commissioned 290MW steam unit, completing the plant’s combined-cycle configuration. The gas units use Iranian-made F-class gas turbines, while the steam unit allows the facility to generate additional power from exhaust heat that would otherwise be wasted.
Iran says its ability to design and manufacture advanced F-class gas turbines places it among only seven countries with indigenous capability in this field. Iranian engineering companies, particularly MAPNA Group, have developed and deployed domestic F-class turbine models, including the MGT-70, at other power plants. The shift from older E-class turbines toward more efficient F-class technology has reduced Iran’s dependence on foreign suppliers such as Siemens and GE while strengthening the country’s energy self-sufficiency and helping reduce fuel consumption.
